Joanna Game is a floral artist and lover of the wild.
“I am hugely inspired by the seasonal abundance in the Devon lanes, woods and river banks and my very favourite thing to do is share it with others”
I am a floral artist inspired by nature.
All my life flowers have held me captive - as a child any walk, be it with a picnic in the countryside or a shopping trip into town, a fist full of flowers would always return home with me.
In my twenties I lived in London, had a career in nursing and started a family and when my son started school I looked to return to work in a more creative capacity. A chance conversation at the school gates had me accompanying a friend to New Covent Garden and from there on flowers took over. At first I worked on corporate events in large London venues, and on the many trips to buy flowers it was always the small bucket of British blooms hiding at the back that had me most excited, We made plans to leave London for Devon and I fantasised about growing my own. I did one of the first Sarah Raven cutting garden courses which had us eating lunch in her kitchen and admiring her then small but perfectly formed growing area - I was and remain inspired.
Dartmoor has been home now for 20 years during which time I have had four cutting areas to varying degrees of success but now with a few raised beds outside my studio I feel I finally have something that works. For several years I had a busy events business which I loved. Starting with imported flowers and a few special British additions until eventually only British would do and for the last eight years I have used only locally grown and my own flowers.
The children grew and left home and my creativity shifted and stretched, and I looked to find a way to fulfil my creative urges. This all came together at a time (2020) when a break was forced upon us all and so I made the leap and set up the Beltane weekend at Prussia Cove. Beltane came from a place in which I wanted to provide a beautiful space and all the tools for others who are finding their voice and need the gift of time to explore and play. Giving ourselves the gift of time is surely one of the best gifts of all. For those who have less time I run seasonal day classes from my Dartmoor studio.
I feel I have come full circle and I am now busy with handfuls of wild flowers again - Lucky me!
